His meticulous insight into the 1989 IRONMAN race was extremely thorough and detailed. He specializes in crunching scientific data. They understood that if I was mentally ready for the race, I would have the ability to prevail and win world championship number seven. They had experienced my highs and lows throughout the years. “Collectively, my three close friends-Mike, Pat, and John, plus my sister Jane-had a direct bead on my mental and physical makeup. ![]() I’d stick with Dave until there was no question that the finish was close enough to ensure there would be no collapse.” No, this year, if I was strong enough to match his pace, I’d learn from the best in the sport how to pace it. Each ended up with complete meltdowns late in the marathon. Both of those strategies failed miserably. So l tried pulling away from Dave early on the run. Previously, I’d tried going off the front on the bike. I had one strategy going into 1989, and that was to stay with “The Man” until the very end of the race. Instead of dreading another showdown with Dave, I looked forward to trying something new. I kept waiting for the usual river of sweat to form all over my body-but it never happened. But the sight of the lava brought me a feeling that no matter how the race went, I’d be okay. I knew the race would be at least as intense as every other year. My first glimpse of the Island and the long ribbon of road where the race would unfold gave me an unexpected sense of peace. ![]() The fear would grow and grow and GROW until the starting cannon finally sounded on race morning.īut those hallowed ten-days before the race in 1989 were different. I saw the reality of where I had to race. ![]() In all my previous six flights to Kona, the moment I looked down on the approach and saw the Queen K Highway, where the decisive moments of the race would place, I’d get something like vertigo. Two years earlier, I was bleeding internally and had to be rushed to the hospital right after crossing the finish line. I knew what a day gone bad could end up looking like. But not even the overbearing aura of Dave Scott and his six victories came close to hitting me with the same terrifying fear I had about the fact that the race and the Island could chew me up and spit me out in a million broken pieces. For sure there would be moments when I would think about them, especially when I’d see them out training. The immensity of Ironman drowns out worrying about the other competitors. It was ten days with one singular focus: tune myself into what it would take to handle the intensity and challenges of the race that was coming on the eleventh day. I would fly in on the Wednesday a week-and-half-out from the Ironman to do my final bits of training on the Big Island. “For me, race week in Kona was actually ten days. A huge shout out (and their names link to their websites should you ever find yourself in need of a great photographer), Rich Cruse, Dave Epperson, Jero Honda, and Mike Plant. Without the support of the photographers who were kind enough to let us use their images this collection of stories wouldn’t have been complete. Both would be ready by Saturday October 14, 1989. ![]() Each was putting the final polish on what had been weeks of punishing training. He was trying to ensure that this time would be different to achieve the greatest victory any triathlete could hope for. He was putting it in place each and every one of those closing seven day going into the 1989 Ironman World Championship. But, more importantly, no one has ever heard the details of each of their personal journeys during the year leading up to The Greatest Race Ever Run.īoth Dave Scott and Mark Allen knew what it took to win races. Neither Dave nor Mark have told this story from each of their perspectives. Everyone has seen accounts of the race itself. This is the ninth of ten untold stories about the incredible moments of personal challenge and the decisions made that led to the 1989 side-by-side eight-hour battle between Dave Scott and Mark Allen. Since data is directly acquired from a surface memory buffer, it is very high-speed and works with smaller CPU load. That is, the Dxtory movie capture program!ĭxtory by ExKode is a movie capture tool for DirectX and OpenGL Applications. However there is another way that is separate from the built in video recorder with Space Engine. ![]() Once installed it will show up in your list of codecs when you press configure on the F9 video capture window in Space Engine. So, instead of using the Lagarith lossless video codec (faster, AVI, smaller than 4GB), you can use the lossless Ut-video-codec (slower, MP4, larger than 4GB). H.264 does give you the highest quality compared to file size though. Also H.264 is slow to seek in a player, so if you intend to browse around the video stream, either fixing stuff or looking for stuff, it's not an ideal choice. Although it can contain different codecs, the most commonly used codecs in the MP4 container like H.264 aren’t totally suitable in an editing environment. It is commonly both an acquisition (recording) and delivery (playing) format. MPEG’s MP4 container is an industry standardized format based on Apple Quicktime MOV with some additional extending features. To build MP4s larger than 4GB the muxer must use 64-bit addressing. The good news is there is no 4GB limit for MP4s. Also many video players have trouble playing ANY file types larger than 4GB. There are non-standard extensions to the container format, like OpenDML which overcomes the 4GB file limit, but video player support is dubious. In its standard form, the container does not support files larger than 4GB, does not properly support timecode, and doesn’t properly support pixel aspect ratios. It comes from the container, or in this case, the AVI file format. The 4GB limitation does not come from the Lagarith video codec or Space Engine. Hope that helps! Making vids is a blast of fun! I think I made like 70 thirty second clips just last week lol. I always re-select the codec I like and click the configuration button even though I used it last time and am not making changes, out of habit I guess, but it almost always works smoothly. ![]() Also in fullscreen mode you must alt-tab over to the window which has the selections of codecs to you and the configurations button. ![]() I get much much better videos when in fullscreen mode vs windowed mode, but I don't know which would be better for you. One other note is that if you are using the engine in fullscreen mode you wont see the amount of time you are recording (which shows up in the top window bar on the left). That's pretty good quality and the mp4 file is usually less than 50MB. I actually move the huge avi file to my phone and convert it to a 1080HD mp4 with 30 frames per sec. I like the one above because there are only 4 things to check in configurations and most importantly I am not using my processor to encode the video at the same time I am recording it and trying to move around in the game. Some require that you check mark "grab" and what folder location to save it in. I think the reason you are not having luck with other codecs is they aren't actually installed on your computer or you have not changed their settings in configuration. Files larger than 4GB will return an error message, so try not to record more than 1 minute, you might get up to a minute and a half if you are lucky. It creates a perfect copy of what you see on the screen, but it is a HUGE avi file. ![]() That's likely because while the American Red Cross has achieved an overall Charity Navigator rating of 85% (80% for financial organization and 93% for accountability & transparency), Charity Navigator maintains no rating for the Clinton Foundation at all. Most news outlets turn to Charity Navigator when seeking out figures for any one charity organization's effectiveness, but no such claim was proffered about the comparative rankings of the American Red Cross and the Clinton Foundation by Charity Navigator. However, the comparison arguably constitutes cherry picking, in that CharityWatch is a far smaller, atypical arbiter of charity ratings. 88%, the Red Cross was less efficient because they spent more money to raise money ($30 per $100) than the Clinton Foundation ($3 per $100) did, according to CharityWatch. While the Red Cross achieved a higher "Program Percentage" (share of monies allocated to services) than the Clinton Foundation at 90% percent vs. With respect to the original tweet, it was true that CharityWatch gave the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation an " A" rating by CharityWatch in April 2016, while by contrast they assigned an " A-" grade to the American Red Cross of August 2016. CharityWatch’s work is supported by individual donations. Lists of top-rated charities can be viewed free, but the group’s full thrice-yearly reports - which feature updates and investigations into wrongdoing in the industry - require a $3 payment for the first sample and then a $40 to $200 yearly membership fee after that. Questions addressed include possible fraudulent valuation of donations, inappropriate categorizations of program expenses and legitimate reasons for seeming financial inefficiency. ![]() ![]() The site is supported through charitable donations from large donors and individual users.ĬharityWatch (): Formerly called the American Institute of Philanthropy, this 20-year-old organization performs in-depth analysis of about 550 charities. Some aspects of the site are free to all users, while others require registration. People interested in specific categories can find several Top 10 lists of the best and worst charities. In coming years, Charity Navigator aims to add information on charitable program results. Reports are based largely on self-reported data. Charity Navigator is the much larger and more highly regarded site, while the smaller CharityWatch's Wikipedia entry shows that organization to employ a ranking methodology that has generated a large "Criticism" section.Ī 2011 ranking of charity watchdogs contrasted the two sites:Ĭharity Navigator (): Evaluates about 5,500 nonprofits with starred reviews and helpful, graphic-heavy reports that now include evaluations of transparency and links to similar charities. How much credence one should afford these rankings is debatable, however. The former ranked the Clinton Foundation (A) slightly higher than the Red Cross (A-), while the latter doesn't rank the Clinton Foundation at all. That phenomenon likely stemmed from confusion " CharityWatch" and " Charity Navigator," two similarly-named charity evaluation services. #discussĪs seen in the example field above, the claim caused some skepticism among social media among users who were unable to independently corroborate the claim. Today's fun fact: CharityWatch gives the Clinton Foundation a higher rating (A) than it gives the Red Cross (A-). On 28 August 2016, a popular tweet initiated a rumor that as a charity, the Clinton Foundation scored higher in efficiency than the well-known aid-providing Red Cross organization: The larger and more highly regarded Charity Navigator stopped evaluating the Clinton Foundation after an early 2015 dispute over bad press and allegations of a lack of transparency, then on 1 September 2016 reinstated the Foundation's rating. |
